At its simplest, massage is the manipulation of soft tissue. It was practiced by the Chinese many thousands of years ago, then the Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures and was accepted for its healing powers. The art seems to have declined during the Middle Ages until Per Henrik Ling, reintroduced what we have come to know as 'Swedish Massage' in the 19th Century. Today, thankfully, the role massage therapy plays is in revitalizing muscles and in fostering a general feeling of well-being and is once more appreciated. Massage is a natural therapy, enjoyed by people off all ages and from all walks of life.
A science and an art
Massage is defined as a scientific method of rubbing, kneading, and manipulating the body to stimulate circulation, improve metabolism and break down adhesions.
Swedish massage is based on particular movements - effleurage, petrissage, kneading, stroking, tapotement, and frictions all used in a routine that will last for at least one hour. Other lengths of routine can be discussed if preferred.
